Trivandrum Engineering Science and Technology (TrEST) Research Park is being set up inside the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET). The main objective of TrEST Park is to promote partnership and interaction between academic community and industry. The synergy is expected to benefit both and bring about qualitative and quantitative improvements. The model is seen as the vehicle for growth in the knowledge economy and has already been proved in Stanford Research Park in Silicon Valley, IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai and many more in China and other countries. It is expected that TrEST Research Park will succeed in developing new technologies and foster inventions resulting in new technology companies coming up in the Park in various engineering disciplines. Even though the Park is being set up inside the CET the vision is to eventually bring in all engineering and technology academic and research institutions in Kerala into its fold. From the State’s perspective, TrEST Park will help in generating high quality employment and help in economic development of the State.
The International Association of Science Parks defines a Science Park as “an organisation managed by specialised professionals, whose main aim is to increase the wealth of its community by promoting the culture of innovation and the competitiveness of its associated businesses and knowledge-based institutions. To enable these goals to be met, a Science Park stimulates and manages the flow of knowledge and technology amongst universities, R&D institutions, companies and markets; it facilitates the creation and growth of innovation-based companies through incubation and spin-off processes; and provides other value-added services together with high quality space and facilities.” Research parks are seen increasingly around the world as a means to create dynamic clusters that accelerate economic growth and international competitiveness.
The Research Parks are non-profit making facility provided and attached to Universities and Institutions to provide facilities to industries to start research centres. These Research Parks will create an environment whereby industry can leverage the specialized expertise of the faculty of the technical institutions, utilize their research facilities, while providing part time employment and experience to students.
The Research Park assists companies with a research focus to set up a base in the park and leverage the expertise available in the university/academic institution. The Research Park breaks down the traditional, artificial barriers of innovation through its connectivity and collaborative interaction. This helps the industry to create, integrate, and apply advancements in knowledge. The resulting synergy leads to matchless technological innovation and transfer.
A university research park is a “cluster of technology-based organizations that locate on or near a university campus in order to benefit from the university’s knowledge base and ongoing research. The university not only transfers knowledge but expects to develop knowledge more effectively given the association with the tenants in the research park. University research parks are property-based ventures that promote a university’s research and development activities as well as local economic development. Effective parks can aid in the transfer of technology and business skills between university and industry teams, encourage the creation of startups, and promote technology-led economic development for the community or region.
The coming together of the Corporate R & D, the faculty and students of academic institution will increase the probability of successful innovation. This is the Golden Triad and the essential elements of this Triad are:
